Introducing: Professor Doctor Hans-Curt Flemming

The npj Biofilms and Microbiomes Community team asked me to introduce myself to the community by answering these 5 questions…

1) If I had to describe what I do in 3 sentences I’d say…

I am now harvesting from decades of experimental life. I am quite surprised that biofilms still fascinate and surprise me, as from the first moment. And I try to understand them in a greater context of biology. My main occupation, after retirement, is reading and writing.

2) This isn’t where I started out, however. My career path to date has looked like this…

In 1986, I was at the third ISME conference in Ljubljana and listening to all the early biofilm seigneurs, such as Bill Costerton, Kevin Marshall, David White and Bill Characklis. From then on, I knew that this is a huge and unploughed field of research. My dream was to establish a Biofilm Centre in Germany and it was possible to fulfil it.

3) The reason I decided to join the npj Biofilms and Microbiomes Community is…

Because I find this a really cool idea, one which I actually suggested to Staffan Kjelleberg. The platform is fascinating and the use of advanced communication is too.

4) My key areas of interest, on which I’d especially like to hear from community members, are…

EPS as ‘Perfect Slime’; concepts about the biofilm lifestyle and ways to manage biofilms. And the dream would be to see the evidence that life started on surfaces, developing into biofilms.

5) And if I had to choose one topic on which I’m especially able to answer questions it’d be…

Pathogens in biofilms and biofouling of technical systems. And, of course, EPS as ‘Perfect Slime’.

If you are interested in my areas of research, I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to comment below, send me a message or ask a question via Q&A.
